Chapter 19

Leif

In hurrying towards the main chamber hall, it seemed to Leif that all the cave passages were echoing with a preternatural silence. He hoped the quiet hum was due to his clan keeping quiet to avoid his wrath.

As they damn well should, the fools!

He should have been more careful to keep something like this from happening. Kept Magnus under watch. If that bastard caused the other clan—the Outcasts, they called themselves—to come into their caves in search of the woman, there would be an all-out battle.

Marissa kept pace at his back, her breathing rapid on his neck.

Leif ducked into the cave where the Outcast woman was being held and took in everything at a glance. His clan had already gathered there again, despite having just been cleared out. They stood away from the box itself, and that was because an unfamiliar man with a wolf was standing in front of it.

This cannae be good.

The wolf was held back from the crowd by a short length of rope, clutched in the man’s hand. Though it was a rather small wolf, visible fury blazed in its eyes, and its teeth were bared. If it was able to pull away from the man, someone would certainly die at its fangs.

The captive woman spoke to the man. “Evan, listen to me! It’s all a big misunderstanding. I don’t think these people mean us harm.”

Leif strode forward, between his clan and the intruders.

“Whoever ye are, friend, listen to her and stand down. If ye dinnae, ye will soon find yerself regretting that decision.”

The man looked just as wild and crazy as the wolf at his side.

“A misunderstanding, aye? Ye kidnap a woman, hit her over the head when she’s alone and vulnerable, then put her in a box so yer people can throw rotten food at her! I’ll say there’s been a misunderstanding, and ’til ye explain why, I will most certainly no’ stand down, friend.”

His words were a challenge to the clan, who pressed in behind Leif, drawing their weapons. The sound of ringing steel was muffled only by the thick branches and leaves of the surrounding magical orchard.

The wolf crouched in preparation for an attack, growling louder than ever before.

The woman yelled, “No, Ranulf!”

The wolf twitched its ears and jerked its head back a little, like the man holding the lead had yanked on it. Then, it turned around, putting itself in a vulnerable position to obey the woman. It lifted its head. Though Leif could no longer see its eyes, he had the distinct impression that woman and animal had locked eyes.

The wolf dropped its head and lowered its tail, whining.

“Good.” The woman lowered her voice. “Evan, let him come.”

The man named loosened his grip on the lead.

The wolf took advantage and slunk towards the woman.

“Good boy,” she repeated. “Now sit.”

The wolf’s haunches at once dropped to the floor.

“I can control him,” the woman said, without looking up from the wolf. “He’s of no real threat to any of you. He’s just upset because he’s protecting me.
